I love the Dreamcast

April 10, 2007

Sorry for the long silence everyone. Those of you who follow the comments know that I had some problems with my health, there wasn’t much to post other than whining of how bad I’m feeling ;)

I’ve improved a lot though, and while I’m not completely recovered yet I’m more than ready enough to waste my time with playing and hacking games. I’m working on and off on the tools needed for DQM and Haruhi, I haven’t made a lot of progress though yet. I don’t like programming, so I pretty much have to force myself to it. Stupid stuff >_<

Now on to good and exciting news. Last week the emulation scene saw the release of a new Dreamcast emulator called nullDC. It's absolutely awesome! So far it played everything I threw at it, and at full speed too. I love the Dreamcast, it's one of my most favorite consoles. With a good DC emulator at my disposal, I couldn't help but play around with hacking a Dreamcast game. Call it divine intervention if you like ^_^

I think the screenshot speaks for itself. Click it for a full view. I decided to work on the cool Trigger Heart Exelica. It’s an arcade shooter with a small story mode. It only has a bit of text, so it’s ideal for an experimental project. Don’t worry Dragon Quest fans, this won’t detract me for long. The main purpose of the project is to take a good look on Dreamcast hacking, maybe even to inspire others to try it too. I’ve figured out most of what I needed to know about the game, I’ll make a script dump next and that’s it for a while.

Edit: I’ve been asked if it was such a good idea to translate such a new game (it’s only a few months old). I propably won’t actually release a patch for the game. It’s perfectly playable in Japanese anyway, so it’s not as if anyone would need it. As I said, it’s experimental to have a reason to take a good look at the dreamcast as a platform for romhacking. If things go good, I might tackle translations of other Dreamcast games which actually need a translation (deSPERIA or Sakura Teisen come to mind) at a later date (definitely not in the near future!). So please consider this before you hastly condemn me of heating up Dreamcast piracy.
